Sacraments and Services

The sacraments and services listed use the liturgy of the Reformed Church in America. SACRAMENTS The Reformed Church celebrates the two sacraments instituted by Jesus; Baptism and The Lord’s Supper. Baptism is the entrance into the Church of Jesus Christ and is offered to those who affirm their trust that Jesus is their only Lord and Savior.  Recipients of Baptism affirm their faith and belief that the writings of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures are the only rule for faith and life. They also accept the guidance of the church, promising to exhibit the new joy of life in Jesus by participating fully in the life of the church with worship, service, prayers, and gifts.  Infants and children of congregational members are eligible for Baptism as part of the covenant God has made with his people.  Parents who are members of another congregation may request Baptism for their child at the Old Stone Church.  This request is presented to the Board of Elders.  Contact Pastor Fretz for more information.  The Lord’s Supper was instituted by Jesus at the final meal with his disciples the night he was arrested, leading to his crucifixion by the Roman Government.  The elements of bread* and wine** are offered as signs and seals of the promise that this meal a feast of remembrance, communion, and hope. We remember that Jesus was sent to us by God the Father, assumed our flesh and blood, fulfilled all obedience to the divine law, sacrificed himself for us on the cross, and was resurrected from the grave.  We commune with Jesus through the promise signified by the bread and wine, as Jesus is the true heavenly bread and wine that nourishes our souls.  In this, we abide in him and bear the fruit of thanksgiving and good works in response to his saving grace.  In the communion we share the hope that what we do now is a pledge and foretaste of the feast of love in the kingdom of God. All baptized members of Christian churches are welcome to share in this sacrament.  *Bread – we offer gluten free communion waffers   **The wine we use is non-alcoholic.  We do this so everyone may use both elements without fear of allergic reactions, drug interactions, or other problems triggered by alcoholic beverages.  SERVICES Weddings The Old Stone Church celebrates weddings as a sacred event.  Weddings are open to couples who seek a Christian wedding and have obtained the appropriate licence from the State of New Jersey through the local health departments of their communities or in Upper Saddle River.  Pastor Robert Fretz conducts all weddings (unless unavailable for the date).   If music is requested, the couple is to make arrangements with Organist Rozanne Sullivan.  If you want to have a wedding at the Old Stone Church, it is best to contact Pastor Fretz before reserving a hall for the receiption.  Only one wedding is performed on any given day of the week.  Fees include: $500 – Old Stone Church; $400 – Pastor Fretz; $300 – organist; $250 – wedding coordinator.  The total is $1,400.00.  There is a $500 non-refundable deposit (to Saddle River Reformed Church) required before the date is reserved.  If you have any questions, please call the church office (201-327-5242).  Funerals The Old Stone Church is available to anyone who seeks a Christian funeral service.  Pastor Fretz conducts the service unless unavailable.  Either the family or the funeral home can make the arrangements for the service.  Fees include: $300 – Old Stone Church; $300 – Pastor Fretz; $200 – organist; $100 – sexton.
